Resumes are a page or two compilation of your personal information, education, credentials, accomplishments, and character references. Kim from our Talent Acquisition team is about to share her top 5 tips on how to construct a competitive resume that will surely get you the job your applying for.

Tip #1 STRENGTHS

When making a competitive resume always remember that you are tailor fitting your resume to the company and job position you wish to apply for. So in order to catch the eye of the recruiter, you must first focus on your strengths and create a summary of your main skills, training, and professional experience.

Make sure to place your main contact details in your resume with your email address so that potential recruiters may contact you as soon as they find a position suited for you.  Other than your phone number your email address is another option for recruiters to contact you. So, in this case, your email address should look professional. We suggest you use your first name and last name for example firstname_lastname@chosendoamin.

Tip#2 CAREER SUMMARY AND/OR OBJECTIVE

Your resume is going to be your ticket for career growth so you need to have a very compelling career summary and/or objective.

For experienced professionals who are looking for better opportunities make sure to put a career summary at the very beginning of your resume. Your career summary will give recruiters an overview of your professional experience. Better if your career summary is connected with the job that you are applying for.

For fresh graduates, you can have an objective. Your objective is a short description as to why you want to work for the company and what you want to gain from them.  Give a short description as to why you are applying for that job and what makes you a good candidate for the role. Whether it’s a career summary or objective keeping it short and simple is always best.

Tip#3 HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANT STUFF

When highlighting the important stuff, those are your work experiences, training, achievements, and certifications. When typing down your highlights on your resume the reverse chronological order format is the best way to go. This means that you list your most recent position and preceding backwords. This may further help you more because it helps to highlight your career growth and continuous work history.

Tip#4 CHARACTER REFERENCES

Just like any other company, recruiters need to do a background check for potential candidates to give them an overview of their work ethics and character. This is more essential for candidates who are applying for a higher position.

When listing down your character references if you are an experienced professional. It is suggested if you have two character references. The first one can be your supervisor or team leader and the other one may be from your HR department. For fresh graduates, it is essential if you list down also two references. Namely your Intern Supervisor and the dean of the college.

 Tip#5 PROOFREAD

It is better to be safe than to be sorry! Always remember that before saving and or sending out your resume. Be on the lookout for typos and inconsistencies from the format, the grammar, the spelling, and most importantly updated information.

Online sending of applications has been trending nowadays and because of the internet recruiting has never been made easier. If you are planning to send out your resume via email or the company’s website, make sure that the format of your resume is on PDF and name the file with your name.

BONUS TIP! COVER LETTERS

If you’re sending your resume via email it’s a plus if you are going to write a cover letter. Cover letters are eye-openers for your potential employers to get a chance to know you and your qualifications a little better.
